Recent buzzwords are “AI-native” and especially the “AI-native law firm”, but what do they mean and why are they a big deal in the legal industry?
First, let’s exclude what they’re not.
Using AI tools is not the same as being AI native
A traditional law firm deciding to use AI as a tool does not make it “native”. This is just as true as using a spreadsheet does not make your firm “Excel-native” or using a database does not make you “Lexis Nexis native”. This is true even if the tool dramatically improves your efficiency or profitability. It’s still a tool added to the law firm’s toolbox.
Law firms have used technology for decades, even centuries, to improve how they communicate with clients and the legal system. Technologies such as fax machines, internet, mobile phones, laptop computers, and legal software have all transformed how lawyers and law firm staff serve their clients.
Fundamentally, most law firms are using AI as a tool to improve their business. The AI has not changed the firm’s DNA or structure at a core level.
What makes a law firm AI native?
An AI-native law firm has AI as its very foundation, and has AI incorporated into most or all of the things it does. You could almost think of the firm as a services and software company shaped like a law firm.
In the AI native law firm, the efficiencies and insights of AI are reflected in the law firm’s legal workflows, internal systems, client service delivery and firm strategy. The AI allows work to be done more efficiently, and more work to be performed with the same resource inputs. Over time, that should translate into cost savings for the clients.
It is still early days for AI-native law firms, but they hold tremendous potential to shake up the legal industry. Firms that are built around AI, rather than simply using AI tools, may be better positioned to rethink pricing, workflows, staffing, scalability, and the delivery of legal services.
This will be exciting to watch!
